Selling your home: 6 style mistakes to avoid in the bathroom

Kitchens may be the hub of the home, but bathrooms are where we spend a lot of personal time. That said, it’s not a space for you to leave any personality that could turn off potential buyers.

1. Kids bath toys are part of the decor

Come on, parentals. There’s no way you can overlook kids’ toys being left in the bathroom when it comes time to sell. Strip all evidence of anyone existing in the space and let potential buyers imagine themselves in the bath without fear of the Submarine Spray Station attacking them.

2. All your lotions and potions are on display

Nobody wants to know that your short and curlies have started going grey or that you’re currently slapping on the Anusol to tackle life’s unwanted problems. This is all evident if you leave out loofahs, creams, hair dye, fake tan and every other trick in the medicinal toolbox. All showers and vanities should be stripped of these sorts of items. Keep it all looking very hotel room.

3. Your toilet is not clean enough to eat off

There’s nothing worse than going to an open home to see the loo in a dire state. It should honestly look brand new and be glistening from flush button to S-bend. The same goes for any lingering bathroom smells. Do all your necessarily expelling well before the viewing. Then open windows, light a candle, and leave no signs of your existence.

4. You’ve not taken to grout with a toothbrush

Potential buyers will get up close and personal with your bathroom tiles. You either crack out the elbow grease and remove all the mould and mildew from drains and grout, or get in a cleaner to do it for you. A collection of hairs in a drain is enough to make any buyer run for the hills. They’ll expect to walk into a spotless space, and you had better deliver it if you want to sell.

5. You’re highlighting the lack of storage

Some smaller bathrooms lack storage. It’s unavoidable. Selling is all about highlighting the positives and masking the negatives, so don’t bother leaving in storage caddies or stick-on shelves that clutter the space. Create a light and bright feeling in your bathroom and potential buyers will be so wowed they won’t even notice the storage issues.

5. There are no gorgeous towels to be seen

When selling a home, buyers want to have their potential bathroom feel clean and bright. They want to imagine unwinding with a bath at the end of the day. With this in mind, have fresh towels on rails and a smaller stack on vanities if there’s space. Create those day-spa feels and the offers will come rolling in. A bonus little succulent or fern will also go a long way if you can fit it in.
