15 cleaning hacks that will ultimately improve your life

It’s a rare soul who likes cleaning and actually looks forward to it, especially when the results are hard to notice or it takes hours to achieve them.

So, with that in mind, here are our favourite cleaning hacks that will save you time and money – and preserve your sanity.

1. Use vinegar to remove mould

Dilute four parts vinegar – which causes mould to overeat and die – with one part water, then grab a microfibre cloth and get scrubbing.

2. Rent a carpet cleaning machine

Instead of hiring professional carpet cleaners, save some cash and do it yourself. Bunnings and Woolworths hire out steam cleaners for as little as $39 for 24 hours.

3. Multi-task with baby wipes

Baby wipes are not just for babies. They’re amazing at getting stains out of pretty much anything, including clothes, shoes, upholstery and even wedding gowns. Yes, really!

4. Wear rubber gloves to remove pet hair

Don rubber gloves and brush your hands over your couch, bed and anywhere else your furry friend likes to nap. The pet hair will stick to the gloves, almost like magic.

5. Shine stainless steel with baby oil

Remove dirt and finger marks from your fridge or oven with warm soapy water, then polish gently with baby oil. Be sure to wipe in the direction of the grain for a shiny finish.

6. Wipe your phone with moist towelettes

Research shows the average mobile phone contains more bacteria than a toilet seat. Use a moist towelette to wipe away germs and other invisible nasties.

7. Squeegee the shower screen

Save yourself the hassle of scrubbing built-up soap scum and mineral deposits by squeegeeing your shower screen after every shower. One minute of squeegeeing will save you so much more time in the long run.

8. Clean the microwave with lemon

Pop a slice of lemon in a bowl of water and microwave on high for two minutes. Crusted-on food will simply slide away.

9. Blend with soap & water

The best way to clean your blender is the same way it became dirty – by blending. Fill it with a small amount of hot water and a dash of detergent and blend away.

10. Use baking soda & vinegar as oven cleaner

Make a paste with baking soda and water. Coat the inside of the oven evenly and leave overnight. The next morning, soak a cloth in vinegar and use it to scrape off the baking soda.

11. Vacuum your dog

Forget vacuuming the floors, couch and every other surface on which your dog sheds hair. Vacuum attachments like the Dyson Groom Tool remove loose hair directly from your dog.

12. Use detergent to remove oil stains

Grease stains ruining your clothes? Rub a little detergent into the stains before you put them through the wash. The detergent will help to dissolve the grease.

13. Clean walls with melamine erasers

Otherwise known as Magic Erasers, these powerful sponges will remove food stains and scuff marks from your walls – and leave the paint intact.
